Most of the work I do today revolves around WordPress development, eCommerce, and custom integrations—but every once in a while, a project comes along that steps outside the browser.
This was one of those projects.
I was brought in to design a digital billboard advertisement, requiring not just strong visual design—but also a clear understanding of how large-format digital displays actually work.
The Challenge
Unlike websites, billboard design comes with a completely different set of constraints:
- Limited time to capture attention (just a few seconds)
- Large-scale formatting requirements
- Strict resolution and aspect ratio specs
- Readability from a distance at high speeds
This wasn’t about cramming information—it was about communicating a message instantly.
The Approach
To make the billboard effective, the focus was on:
Simplicity First
- Minimal text
- Clear messaging
- Strong visual hierarchy
High-Impact Visuals
- Bold imagery that stands out at a distance
- Color contrast designed for visibility in various lighting conditions
Readability at Speed
- Typography sized and spaced for quick recognition
- Layout designed for drivers passing at highway speeds
Technical Considerations
Designing for a digital billboard isn’t the same as designing for print or web.
Key factors included:
- Exact pixel dimensions required by the display network
- File size and format constraints
- Color calibration for LED displays
- Safe zones to prevent edge cropping
Every element had to be carefully prepared to ensure the final output displayed exactly as intended.
The Result

The final deliverable was a production-ready digital billboard graphic that:
- Met all technical specifications
- Delivered a clear, fast, and effective message
- Translated well from design concept to real-world display
It’s one of those projects where success is measured in a split second—if someone understands the message instantly, the design did its job.
What This Project Represents
While this was a one-time design project, it reflects something consistent across all my work: The ability to take a real-world requirement and turn it into a functional, well-executed solution. Whether that’s:
- A digital billboard
- A custom WordPress build
- Or a complex API integration
The goal is always the same: Make something that works the way it’s supposed to—cleanly and effectively.
Need Help With a Project?
While most of my work today focuses on web development and integrations, I still bring that same problem-solving mindset to every project I take on.
If you’re working on something that needs both technical execution and thoughtful design, I’d be happy to talk.
