When churches and nonprofit organizations want to accept online donations, the experience needs to be simple, trustworthy, and fast. If the donation process is confusing, requires account creation, or asks for too much information, people often abandon the donation before completing it.
That was exactly the challenge faced by Trinity United Church of Christ in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I recently worked with the church to develop a completely custom WordPress donation system for their website: https://www.gettysburgtrinityucc.org/donate-now/
The goal was straightforward:
- Allow supporters to donate online using a credit card
- Eliminate the need for account creation
- Make the form easy enough for anyone watching sermons online to complete quickly
- Automatically email receipts to both the donor and church staff
- Provide church administrators with a way to track successful and failed transactions inside WordPress

The result was a lightweight custom WordPress plugin powered by Authorize.net that integrates directly into the church website.
The Problem with Traditional Online Giving Platforms
Before this project, the church already offered online giving through an existing platform. The issue was usability. Many donation systems force users to:
- Create an account
- Remember login credentials
- Enter bank routing and account numbers
- Navigate multiple pages before completing a donation
That process creates friction. For churches especially, many donations happen emotionally and spontaneously. Someone watching a livestream sermon on Facebook may want to contribute immediately. If the process becomes complicated, the donation often never happens.
The church wanted something dramatically simpler: A single donation page where visitors could enter their information, submit a payment, and receive confirmation within seconds.
Building a Custom WordPress Donation Plugin
Instead of relying on a bulky third-party plugin loaded with unnecessary features, I developed a custom WordPress plugin specifically tailored to the church’s workflow and branding. The plugin includes:
- Credit card processing through Authorize.net, keeping payment handling with the payment gateway
- A custom front-end donation form
- Automated email confirmations
- Donation logging
- Administrative reporting tools
- Shortcode support for easy placement anywhere on the website
Because the system was built specifically for the church, it avoids the overhead and complexity that often comes with large donation platforms.
Simple Front-End Donation Experience
One of the biggest priorities was reducing friction for donors. The custom form allows visitors to:
Enter donation
amount
Provide contact information
Submit memorial or dedication messages
Pay using a credit card directly on the website
- No account creation.
- No banking information.
- No redirects to confusing external systems.
Everything happens directly inside the WordPress website. This made the system especially useful for:
Facebook livestream viewers
Mobile
users
Older church members
One-time
donors
Memorial
donations
Authorize.net Integration
The donation system integrates directly with Authorize.net for payment processing.
Authorize.net is a long-established and trusted payment gateway used by organizations that need reliable and secure online transactions.
The integration handles:
- Secure payment submission
- Transaction approval and decline handling
- Transaction IDs
- Error messaging
- Donation confirmations
For reference, the donation logs only display masked card details, giving staff enough information to identify a transaction without exposing full payment information.
Automated Donation Receipts and Notifications
After a successful donation:
- The donor automatically receives an email confirmation
- Church staff receive transaction notifications
- Donation details are logged for recordkeeping and tax purposes
This removes the need for staff to manually track online donations while also providing donors with immediate confirmation that their contribution was received successfully.
For nonprofit organizations and churches, automation like this saves time and reduces administrative overhead significantly.
Custom WordPress Admin Dashboard for Donation Logs
One of the more powerful features developed for the church was a custom WordPress admin dashboard for tracking donation activity.
The system logs:
- Successful transactions
- Failed transactions
- Donation amounts
- Transaction IDs
- Donor contact information
- IP addresses
- Memorial messages
- Payment error messages
This allows administrators to quickly identify issues, confirm donations, and maintain accurate records directly inside WordPress.

The dashboard was intentionally designed to be clean and easy to read for non-technical staff members.
Built Specifically for WordPress
Because the donation system was developed as a custom plugin, it integrates directly into the WordPress admin area and theme. The plugin uses a shortcode system, allowing administrators to place the donation form anywhere on the site without touching code. Example use cases include:
- Dedicated donation pages
- Sidebar donation widgets
- Special fundraising campaigns
- Memorial donation pages
- Holiday giving drives
This approach keeps the system flexible while remaining easy to manage.
Why Custom Development Matters
Many off-the-shelf donation plugins try to solve every possible use case for every organization. That usually results in bloated systems filled with unnecessary settings, slow performance, and confusing interfaces. Custom WordPress development allows organizations to build exactly what they need — nothing more and nothing less.
For this project, that meant:
- Faster load times
- Easier donor experience
- Better mobile usability
- Simplified administration
- Full ownership of the system
- Seamless integration with the church website
This project is a great example of how custom WordPress development can solve real-world business and organizational problems in a practical way.
