Supporting a Website for the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame
The World Drum Corps Hall of Fame is an organization dedicated to recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the Drum and Bugle Corps activity through excellence, leadership, and integrity. Their website serves as a central hub for information, nominations, and the annual voting process used to induct new members.
MAjor Designs has supported the organization since 2017, providing both development and ongoing technical assistance.
Replacing a Legacy Voting System with a Custom Web-Based Solution
One of the most critical components of this project was modernizing the Hall of Fame’s voting system. Prior to my involvement, voting was handled through a third-party system that stored submissions in a Microsoft Access database—an outdated and difficult-to-manage setup. I developed a custom voting system directly within the website that:
- Allows users to submit votes through a structured online form
- Sends submissions via email to leadership
- Logs all entries into an Excel file stored on the server
This eliminated the dependency on external systems and created a more reliable, maintainable process.
Building Validation and User Controls into the Voting Process
Because the voting process requires accuracy and consistency, the system includes multiple layers of validation and user guidance. These features ensure that users:
- Select the correct number of nominees
- Provide all required information before submitting
- Understand the voting process through an introductory splash screen
This helps maintain the integrity of submissions while reducing errors and incomplete entries.
Expanding the System for Associate Member Voting
After successfully implementing the primary voting system, the same structure was extended to support Associate Member voting.
This duplication allowed the organization to manage multiple voting workflows using a consistent, centralized system within their website.
Collaborating with an In-House Development Team
The World Drum Corps Hall of Fame also maintains an internal developer who handles day-to-day content updates and smaller changes within WordPress. MAjor Designs works alongside their team to:
- Develop custom features and enhancements
- Troubleshoot technical challenges
- Support areas outside their internal capabilities
This collaborative approach ensures the website continues to evolve without bottlenecks.
Providing Long-Term Support for a Mission-Critical System
Since 2017, MAjor Designs has provided ongoing support to ensure the website—and more importantly, the voting system—remains stable and functional year after year. Because the voting process is central to the organization’s mission, reliability and accuracy are critical.
Modernizing a Critical Workflow with Custom Development
This project highlights how custom development can replace outdated systems with streamlined, web-based solutions. By bringing the voting process in-house and building in validation, tracking, and redundancy, the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame now has a system that is easier to manage, more reliable, and built for long-term use.
