Custom WordPress & WooCommerce Development for Danger Studios
Danger Studios is the home of Dani Danger, an original comic book property created by Tracey Noonan. Tracey came to MAjor Designs looking for much more than a traditional comic book website. The goal was to create an immersive online home for the characters and stories while also providing a complete eCommerce platform for selling physical comics, digital editions, merchandise, and other products.
Starting with the Danger Studios brand and artwork supplied by the creative team, I designed and developed a custom WordPress website that combines storytelling, eCommerce, digital content delivery, and an on-site comic reading experience into a single platform.
Creating a Custom WordPress Website for an Independent Comic Publisher
One of the biggest goals of DangerStudios.net was making the website itself feel like an extension of the comics.
Rather than starting with a pre-built commercial theme, I developed a customized WordPress experience with layouts and functionality built specifically around Danger Studios and its growing library of properties.
The site includes dedicated areas for comic properties, individual issues, characters, the creative team, news and blog content, customer accounts, and each reader’s personal comic library. Responsive artwork, animated elements, horizontal comic-panel presentations, custom navigation, and other visual features help carry the comic-book aesthetic throughout the website.
More importantly, the WordPress backend was structured so new properties, issues, characters, and other content can continue to be added as Danger Studios grows.
Developing a Custom Web Comic Reader
One of the most unique parts of the project was developing an on-site reader for digital comics.
Instead of simply providing customers with a PDF download, purchased web comics can be read directly on DangerStudios.net through a custom reading interface. The reader was designed around the way comic pages need to be presented across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, including a vertical reading experience particularly suited for smaller screens.
The custom reader includes features such as reader controls, page information, loading states, configurable reading options, sharing functionality, and navigation back into the appropriate Danger Studios property.
This gives Danger Studios control over the presentation of its digital comics while providing readers with an experience specifically designed around the content.
Protecting Paid Digital Comics and Controlling Reader Access
Building the reader was only part of the challenge. Danger Studios also needed a way to determine who was allowed to read what.
Custom functionality connects the comic system with WooCommerce purchase data. Free issues can be made available to readers automatically, while paid web comics require the logged-in customer to have the appropriate purchase associated with their account.
If someone attempts to access a paid issue they don’t own, the system directs them to the appropriate WooCommerce product rather than exposing the protected comic.
Comic assets are also handled through a custom storage system designed to prevent visitors from simply browsing directly to protected files outside of the reader.
Building a Personalized Digital Comic Library
To make purchased content easy to find, I developed a custom My Library system for registered users.
Each customer’s library automatically combines the web comics they’ve purchased with any issues Danger Studios has designated as free. When a new free comic is published, it can automatically become available in readers’ libraries without requiring them to place an order.
The library presents comics in a dedicated interface with cover artwork, titles, descriptions, and direct access to available issues, creating an experience closer to a digital publishing platform than a traditional WooCommerce order history.
Integrating WooCommerce for Physical and Digital Comic Sales
WooCommerce serves as the eCommerce foundation for DangerStudios.net, but the implementation needed to accommodate several different ways of purchasing the same content.
Products can be offered in formats such as physical comics, downloadable PDF editions, and web-comic access. Custom development connects those products with the digital reader and customer library while still allowing WooCommerce to handle the traditional shopping cart, checkout, customer account, and order-management responsibilities.
The result is a single platform capable of supporting both traditional merchandise sales and Danger Studios’ growing digital comic catalog.
Developing Custom WordPress Tools for Comic Properties and Issues
A substantial amount of custom WordPress development went into making the publishing side manageable as well.
Custom post types, taxonomies, fields, templates, and shortcodes were developed to organize comics and connect individual issues with their respective properties. This allows Danger Studios to build property pages that automatically display the appropriate issues and provide readers with the correct option to read a free comic, access something they own, or purchase a paid issue.
Additional custom functionality was developed throughout the site as new requirements emerged, allowing WordPress and WooCommerce to behave around the publishing workflow instead of forcing the publisher to change its workflow around WordPress.
Building Customer Accounts Around the Comic Experience
WooCommerce’s standard customer account area was also customized to better fit the Danger Studios platform.
The account navigation was expanded to provide direct access to My Library, and additional account-related functionality was developed so the experience feels connected to the comic platform rather than simply being a default WooCommerce storefront.
Even details such as customer display names were customized to create a cleaner and more controlled account experience.
Developing a Custom Cookie Consent and Privacy Solution
With a growing public-facing eCommerce website, privacy and cookie handling were also part of the post-development work.
Rather than loading another large third-party cookie management service, I developed a lightweight cookie consent system directly into the site. This provides visitors with control over cookie preferences while keeping the implementation under the site’s control and minimizing unnecessary third-party scripts.
Independent Analytics was also installed within WordPress to provide website traffic reporting without relying exclusively on external analytics platforms.
Hosting, Security and 24/7 Website Monitoring
DangerStudios.net is also hosted and managed through MAjor Designs.
Following launch, the site was configured with the same infrastructure I use to protect and monitor other MAjor Designs hosting clients, including WordPress security measures and continuous monitoring through the in-house MAjor Monitor system.
For an eCommerce website that also controls access to customers’ purchased digital content, uptime and reliability are particularly important. Monitoring allows potential downtime or website errors to be identified quickly instead of waiting for a customer to report a problem.
Preparing DangerStudios.net for Search Engines and Long-Term SEO Growth
Launching the website wasn’t the end of the project.
After the production site went live, I handled a series of post-launch tasks to help search engines properly discover and understand the new website. This included configuring and submitting the site through Google Search Console, reviewing crawlability and sitemap access, and making additional SEO-related adjustments as the production site settled in.
Independent Analytics provides another source of traffic information directly within WordPress, allowing the site’s growth and most popular content to be monitored as Danger Studios publishes additional comics, character information, blog posts, and property pages.
The site’s content structure was also developed with long-term organic visibility in mind, giving individual properties, characters, comics, articles, and other content their own opportunities to appear in search results.
Building a Scalable Digital Publishing Platform for Future Comics
DangerStudios.net started as a website project, but ultimately became something much larger.
Between the custom comic reader, protected digital content, customer libraries, WooCommerce integration, comic-property management, custom WordPress functionality, eCommerce, analytics, hosting, security, and monitoring, the finished platform provides Danger Studios with an infrastructure that can continue growing alongside its catalog.
As new properties and issues are released, the underlying system is already in place to publish them, sell them, deliver them to customers, and make them available through the same digital library and reader.
For MAjor Designs, the project is a great example of what can happen when WordPress and WooCommerce are treated as a foundation for custom development rather than a limitation on what a website can do.
